A couple weeks ago I packed up everything in my small garage. I started by marking an eight by fifteen footprint on the ground. I took everything that was in the garage and put into that footprint. I have a lot of crap. I filled up an entire dumpster of "things I could use some day". It's true though that I could have used those things, but I try to set rules where if I haven't touched or used something for two years, I probably will never use it.
Next I needed to rent a U-Haul and being that this is my first "move all of my things to another state move", I didn't schedule anything. They didn't have the size truck that I needed. They only had ten by tens available for one way trips. I was a little concerned that I wouldn't have the space I needed to fit all of my belongings into that size truck, but I surprised myself. I was able to fit it all plus some other totes and things from the house. The hardest thing to pack was my rolling counter top toolbox. I made this makeshift ramp because the ten by ten trucks do not come with one. I asked my neighbor if he could help me roll it up into the truck. He was skeptical that the ramp would hold. I laughed and said that I packed the entire truck thus far using the sketchy ramp... so I think it would hold. We gave it a try and as soon as the toolbox touched the ramp it snapped in half. We laughed it off. I build another ramp, but this time I made it better. I used two pieces of plywood. It held and we were able to load it up.
The next day we got in the truck and crammed our dog Stew into the most uncomfortable spot for an eight hour drive to SLC. The drive was pretty uneventful only stopping for gas twice and a couple restroom stops. The truck was so well packed that nothing moved the entire way! I thought that was impressive because I didn't use any straps or tie downs. The drive was so uneventful that it felt very fast to me. My attention was focused on the little gauge for fuel economy. Keeping it in the sweet zone for the whole trip. Ha, it was fun.
When we got to the new apartment, we didn't unload right away. We explored the new home and thought big dreams. I forgot our air mattress in Denver so I needed to run out and get something for us to sleep on for a couple of nights. The next morning I unpacked most things and waited for help from my partner. I need to get that toolbox out of the truck now and my ramp wasn't going to work this time. While I waited for her, I took all of the drawers out with the tools still inside them. This would help lighten the load because we would need to lift the toolbox out of the truck. For our first attempt we lifted and things seemed to be working out but then the only freaking drawer I left in slid open and threw the center of gravity off. Sending us into panic and distress. We were able to recover the whole lift and cooled down with some cursing and yelling. We tried again, this time locking the drawer so that it couldn't slide open. Things went okay, but then we dropped it on its backside. There wasn't any damage but I wasn't happy about it. At the end of the day we got the job done, but I feel bad that my partner had to go through that.
The rest of our time was spent dealing with logistics and helping some friends. When it was time to come back to Denver we drove a rental car.
We have one final push coming up and then we will be one-hundred percent relocated. Our last day in Denver is 06-12-25.
Stay Restless!
